CHAPTER FIVE

LYNETTE

Gravel. That’s the word that comes to mind when I think of how my eyes are feeling. I really should be lying down next to the kids. I’m not up to full steam myself. However, my thoughts aren’t on me. It’s about them right now. I am truly thankful for the extra hands on deck. We all work the room, going to whichever kid needs us at the moment to help through the pain, the dreams, until they settle down. My only hope is it should almost be coming to an end if it takes the same amount of time it took me.

Walking over, I wedge myself into the spot made in the middle of my three. As I’ve done before, I close my eyes. Taking a deep breath, I tune out the sounds in the room. My body relaxes.

MOLECH

“Let me call Tashia.”

“No,” I growl.

I pin Keagan with my hard gaze. I steal a glimpse of Monea and Gigi to find them staring at Lynette. This is half the reason I didn’t want others present. Every time Lynette does whatever the fuck she’s doing, it happens. What the fuck it is, I don’t know…but we all can feel it.

“Man, fuck you.”

Keagan’s grumble instantly gets my attention. The fact that he’s heading for the doorway doesn’t sit well with me either.

“Where the hell are you going?” I demand to know.

“She’s been off from the beginning. You might be in love, but my ass isn’t.”

“I’m in no mind for a trade-in.”

“Nobody is saying that. What I’m saying is, your lady is goddamn strange…and that means her kids are too. I want to know why?” he stresses. “But you know that already, huh?”

He chuckles at my dark expression.

“Ah, you’ve been played.” He puts his hands up in defeat when I begin walking toward him. “It’s the way. My fuckin’ Monea months before meeting her again was by no mistake. Ma likes to play dumb, but I know it was all her invisible hand. You don’t care, just like I didn’t. I needed help getting what I got, and Tashia gave me that help,” he shrugs. “But dealing with Da is a whole thing entirely,” he comments, hitting the mark.

I sense the portal forming even before it appears at the end of the hall. I only met Tashia twice. Each time, Keagan’s mother always leaves an impression of saying enough but keeping a lot to be used for her own benefit. Which is why she will always be one that I’ll feed with a long spoon. Strolling by, she ignores us to stand in the open archway. She’s silent while she surveys the room. She nods a greeting toward Monea and Gigi, and doesn’t spare Gaia a second glance. No, her narrow eyes are on the cluster of four forms.

Suddenly, she laughs softly under her breath as she shakes her head. Dancing back and forth on her feet, her body shakes with the revelation of what we don’t know.

“What is it?” grumbles Keagan.

Reaching out his hand to drag her by the arm, Tashia finds a way to wiggle free to finally enter the room.
